African Union/United Nations peacekeeping force to be deployed to Darfur

A joint AU/UN peacekeeping force is scheduled to be deployed to Darfur. However, that force won't get deployed without US support.

Go here to sign a petition by Amnesty International, calling on President Bush to support this deployment.

The Global Petition to End the Violence in Darfur
Dear President Bush:

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the continued suffering of civilians in Darfur, Sudan, and eastern Chad. More than four years on, the conflict has led to some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed by deliberate and indiscriminate attacks, and more than 2.5 million civilians have been displaced.

Time is running out.

We therefore strongly urge you to use the authority of your office to:

Set a timeline and benchmarks for the deployment of the African Union/UN peacekeeping force in Darfur;
Protect displaced civilians in neighboring eastern Chad and support a UN presence there;
Ensure sufficient support for African Union and UN peacekeepers to protect civilians and stabilize the region.
We urge you to stand with other world leaders to actively work to protect human rights in Darfur today.
