Mike Nifong disbarred, to leave office next month

Many of you have heard of the alleged rape case at Duke University, involving some lacrosse players and a stripper. Nifong is the prosecutor who filed the charges on highly suspect evidence - the stripper changed her testimony several times. Nifong had witheld DNA evidence from the defence, made inflammatory statements in public about the players and their teammates, and lied to the court.

The fact that an officer of the court lied is only one of the sad things about this case. This also hurts rape victims in general, because here, an alleged rape victim materially changed her testimony in a highly public case; any rape victim who is suspected of inconsistencies in her testimony, or who conceals some facts because she's embarrassed to reveal them, is going to be under suspicion. Additionally, this doesn't do anything good for race relations: the woman in the case was Black, and the players were White. There are still African-Americans who distrust the health care system because of the Tuskeegee study. The Hmong-Americans whose leader was arrested that I profiled earlier believe it was a set-up.
