UAW workers striking at Chrysler

The UAW workers at Chrysler have walked out. One comment on the site that I found interesting:

I am for unions also, but the autoworkers union must realize that their pay and benefit packages are absolutely unsustainable. we can not hold american automakers to a different pay standard double that of asian counterparts working in america. I do believe that america has a skilled manufacturing base that deserve great pay and benefit packages but people all over america are starting to feel the pinch as companies begin taking away pay and benefit increases, and switching their retirement plans alltogether. The world is quickly changing, while we should work to strengthen retirement across the board in america, i believe the days of unionization are numbered. Companies simply can not afford to continue paying exoribident pay and benefit packages that other industries and sectors of america are free from. while i think it would be interesting to have a universal retirement fund and account manditory for every american workplace with employee contributions, that isnt a reality right now. when democrats take over next year because i am confident they will, we might see a resurgance of unionization and a care and consideration for the average working man, but until then we will see a massive shift in this country towards taking more and more away from our employees here in america.

I'm not sure if this person is right about everything. However, I do believe that we need universal healthcare, that we need to keep Social Security in good shape, and that all workers need easier access to 401k-type accounts.

In any case, we do need to pray that the UAW and Chrysler can quickly work out a just solution.
