US Senator asks if nation's drivers should slow down

Senator John Warner of Virginia, an influential Republican, asked the Energy Secretary to determine what speed limit would be best for fuel economy. He may intend to propose a national speed limit, like the 55mph (80kph) limit that was in place during the Arab oil embargo. The Energy Department's website already says that fuel efficiency drops off rapidly over 60mph (100kph).

Not too long ago, drivers in Michigan routinely hit 90 (145kph) on the highway. Even today, I feel like a pariah if I'm doing 65.
