Sojourner Truth dedicated her life to the pursuit of freedom for the African-American people through perils and adversity of all kinds. From the bayous of Mississippi through the heart of Michigan, Sojourner Truth, the embodiment of strength, courage and faith in God,
pulled her brothers and sisters toward the pursuit of freedom.

Sojourner Truth represents much of what is good about the United States of America. Though she has long passed on, she is still leading her people into the promised land.
There are folks who will say this is more proof that I am aligned with the enemies of America. To those who are invested in their xenophobic, idolatrous nationalism, I say that you are committing a grievous sin. And with the world becoming increasingly multipolar, your hubris will soon become irrelevant.
To the folks like Michelle Obama who are only just becoming proud of their country, I say that pride in your country is no sin. One can be proud of one's country and still change it for the better.
I have no idea what Sojourner Truth's attitudes toward the United States of America were. Perhaps it doesn't matter. Sojourner Truth was an American. She represents the best of what the United States of America can be.
Happy 4th of July.
